Night float.
Not my favorite rotation, that’s for damn sure. I’m SO GLAD it’s over.
Husband was gone every night, from 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Then he came home, slept until 2:30. I, of course, work during the day. So I’d work until 6:00. We’d start dinner. Eat. And then he’d be gone again.
While Husband was sleeping, I obviously tried to be quiet so as to not wake him up. This is extra hard because our apartment has this delightful feature where each room is connected by a large vent.
Have you ever noticed that when you are actively trying to be quiet, it’s virtually impossible?
The past couple of weeks, every little thing I did made So Much Noise: Putting soup in the microwave resulted in shrill beeping for every button I pushed – plus the multiple beeps indicating the time was up. Every time I closed a door, it would somehow slip out of my fingers and slam. I get maybe two phone calls in a normal week. While Husband was on night float, I swear I got five a day.
And the ice! You just try getting ice out of an ice cube tray and putting it in a glass without making a tremendous racket.
So… Was I overestimating the amount of noise I was making?
Or was I subconsciously trying to wake Husband up so I could squeeze in a few more minutes with him?
Hmm.
I always wake Husband up when he doesn’t have early classes and I have to be at work. I think it’s just Murphy’s Law that you end up making more noise when you’re trying to be quiet.
It IS hard to be quiet when actually needing to be. Like always a creaky floor board or an accidental door slam? I sometimes try to be a little too loud and wake my boyfriend in hopes he’ll want to cuddle or tell me how cute I am.. usually it backfires and I get yelled at but hey, worth a shot!
