I had a dream the other night that I borrowed a cat. It was a kitten, actually, probably three to six months old – that skinny, lithe stage of kittenhood. The kitten was a dark grey tabby. His name was Craig.
My family and I sometimes discuss cat names. Our goal is to come up with the most ridiculous possible name for a cat. So far, our favorites are Jeremy and Trey (said always in the accent of the SNL Californians skit; see 4:03 in this video). I like the idea of having a pet named Pickle, but that strikes me as more of a dog name. Or maybe more appropriate for a Guinea pig.
My husband – who self-identifies as Not A Cat Person – took me and Carla to a cat convention earlier this fall. It was a long drive in pretty crummy weather and I think it may have been the most bored I’ve ever seen my husband (although he didn’t say A WORD), but Carla and I had a blast. I wasn’t sure what to expect. There were booths of cat toys and cat towers. There was a cat costume contest. There were meet and greets with cat influencers (I am not kidding). But also, there were so many cats! Not all of the cats were available for petting – and, of those, not all of them were in the mood – but we did get to pet a lot of cats.
If you have read this blog for any amount of time, you know that Carla is an avid animal lover. But do you know this about me? I love cats. LOVE THEM. They are my favorite domestic animal. (My favorite wild animal is the porcupine.) If I had my druthers, I would have a house full of cats.
Carla, as I’ve noted, is an animal lover. She does not discriminate per species. I think she would welcome a menagerie of pets, from snakes to parrots, hamsters to fish. Her favorite animal, I think, is a dog, and she and my husband would own a dog in a heartbeat if I weren’t standing in their way. (Once, when Carla was maybe five, she said in that charming/alarming matter-of-fact way of children, “If you died, we could get a dog.” Yes, there’s always a bright side my sweet child.)
Now: brace yourself, because this next bit may be unpleasant.
I do not want a dog.
I appreciate dogs. And I love seeing dogs on your blog and in my email and in your holiday cards and in my text messages. Seriously, you cannot tell me enough anecdotes or send me enough photos of your dog (or child) (or non-dog pet). I love your dog! I do. But I do not want a dog of my own.
I am a cat person. I really hope this does not change our relationship.
The thing is, I am allergic to cats. (And dogs, if we’re being honest. Yes, yes, I know all about hypoallergenic dogs.) So I have never gotten a cat, despite the deep yearning in my soul.
Nonetheless, my husband and I maybe started saying things like, “Perhaps when we have a new, bigger house, we could get a cat.” And the more we said little “maybes” like this, the more my desire has ballooned.
So I was especially keen, at the cat convention, to hold and pet and rub my face against a Siberian. This is a type of cat that has low levels of the protein that causes allergies. It’s a long-haired cat, though, and I have visions of pooplets adhering to butt fur, and visions of cathair tumbleweeds collecting in every corner of my home. But they are very cute cats. They have very agreeable, friendly, doglike personalities, which the Siberian breeder’s partner said pointedly to my husband; “That’s what the men like to hear,” he said, and then shared an anecdote about he never liked cats until he started dating a Siberian breeder and now he loves them. The breeder had two very adorable kittens and I snuggled them and put my face right up into their fur (which I’m sure was a little alarming to the breeder, and maybe the kitten) and I didn’t have ANY REACTION the whole day.
This isn’t an announcement of anything. It’s just a fantasy at this point. I have too much going on right now to add another living being to the mix. Also, Siberian kittens are pricey, OMG. Also also, I need to get past my fear of loving a thing that will inevitably die; it’s hard enough being confronted with that truth when it comes to my parents and brother and husband and child.
But maybe, one of these days, we’ll have a little kitten. And I will definitely try to convince my family to name it Craig.
When I was growing up, we had a lot of cats. They were barn cats, and some of them didn’t last very long. But others were beloved family pets for years. Naming them was one of my favorite things, and I always leaned toward human names. We had, at different times, two pairs of tabbies: Scarlett and Rhett (which is a very odd set of names to give two cats from the same litter, but it made sense at the time), and Rebecca and Josh (yes, I named a cat Josh). There was a beautiful black cat who visited us occasionally – we called him Romeo and I’m guessing he was responsible for Rebecca’s litter of kittens. (Spay and neuter your pets promptly, folks!) Of those, I remember a pale grey cat with white spots I named Cooper and a white cat with seal-point markings I called Kimberly. We kept Kimberly and gave all the other kittens away. A friend adopted one of them – a little black fluffy girl cat with a white chest – and named her Panda, which was short for Pandemonium. Speaking of punny names, I had a friend whose brother raised pigs for 4-H and he named two of them Oscar and Mayer. A little mean, that.
I used to show my cats for 4-H. Kimberly won a blue ribbon, which makes me giggle because even though she looked like a Siamese, she was 100% pure barn cat.
What would you name a cat? What pets have you had in your lifetime, and what were their names? What’s the best or worst possible name you can think of for a pet, and why do you think some names work better than others? Like Oliver is a great pet name – I’ve known several dogs and one cat named Oliver – but the idea of naming a dog or cat Brian or Frank or Anthony or Eric or Margaret or Jean or Susan makes me giggle?
I am kinda sorta attempting to complete NaBloPoMo, with the full expectation that life will make it impossible any day now. If you want to follow along, or join the fun, check out San’s blog here.
I am a cat person, too, who is allergic to them. I adore their indifferent attitude to life, letting you know how you may serve them plus all the great unusual names. We had cats, I loved them, but once they were gone that was it. I’ve never really wanted a dog.
Yes, the indifference is part of the appeal for sure!
I love person names for pets. In grad school, one of my neighbors had a dog named Mike, and I was charmed by that. I would name a cat Pamela.
PAMELA.
Oh, thinking up cat names is one of my favorite things! Our current cats are Pokémon themed. Espurr, who looks just like the Pokémon, is 21 lbs of big barn cat. Iris is a medium haired tabby of fluff. We also had Eevee and Jinx. We only started having cats after my mom died- which I kniw sounds morbid. She was terribly allergic to cats, and I wanted her to visit freely without having an allergy attack.
We did have a cat growing up, just because my sister was moving and we took the cat until she got settled. 16 yrs later, she was still with my parents. She was outdoors a lot, so my mom could stand it. That was a black cat, Midnight Mingle Bathsheba….. a few more name. We were so glad to have a pet , we went a little crazy.
For a tuxedo, Archie is a good name, and and for an orange boy, Galileo.
I think a Siberian would need a name like Dmitri or Tatiana- dramatic and flowing. But Craig would be funny.
I love dogs, too, but never want to own one. I would feel guilty leaving it home alone while we are out. The cats , I know, are happy going about their cat business when they’re alone.
Oh my goodness, the Pokemon universe IS ripe with great names! Love the ones you chose! Good point about the dramatic and flowing name options for a Siberian. Tatiana is an amazing option.
When my husband and I first moved in together, we adopted two kittens who were sisters. Their names were Sable and Patience. We changed Sable’s name to Esmeralda, but kept Patience for the other kitten. The rescue named her that because she had no patience for anything, it fit her perfectly. We have also had 3 dogs named Katie, Shelby, and our current dog, Maisie. The rescue we adopted Maisie from had named her Sable, so we felt we had to meet her. Ultimately, we decided she just wasn’t a Sable to us.
Growing up we had 2 dogs named Gretchen (the 2nd dog was named after the 1st one by my little sister) and a cat named Lady
Two Sables! How interesting! I think there are often “fads” in pet names, but I never would have guessed Sable would be part of that trend. These are all such fantastic names. Esmerelda! I would love to encounter that name on a cat.
I knew that if you were to have a pet, you’d have a cat, but I didn’t realize you were such a Cat Person! This was so fun to read and every single tweet had me laughing this morning. And it’s 4:39, so when I tell you I thought I had to start my day with Suzanne, wow, was that a good call!
I feel about cats the way you feel about dogs! This means we are the best pair! I am interested, and want to hear about them, and am happy for you, but I wouldn’t have a cat. But I love this for you and mayyyybe one day you can convince your husband of the Siberian cat? Maybe?
For some reason, a cat named Kimberly cracks me up.
If I was going to be gone for a lot of the day, I would sometimes take Barkley to doggie day care. Once I went to pick him up at a busy time, and the woman at the front desk picked up her – walkie talkie? Idk, something like that – and was like “Barkley, Scooby, Winston, Mr Fuzzy Pants, and Maggie are all ready for pickup.” And it made me laugh, the variety of names.
YES! We can enjoy vicarious dogs/cats via one another!!! I love the story of picking up Barkley — it must be such a delight to be a veterinary/doggy daycare pet receptionist!
Currently catless, but the last two were Queen Elizabeth I, aka Lizzie, and Sir Walter Raleigh, aka Raleigh, Rollins and Get the Hell Off the Table.
D, this is amazing! When I was born, my parents had two cats with those same names!!! Elizabeth was a gorgeous black cat and Raleigh was a tabby!
My Raleigh was a Russian Blue and Lizzie was a grey tabby. She lived to be 17.5 years old. When I was small my cousins always had barn cats, and they all, regardless of gender, were named Henrietta.
First, Russian Blues are so beautiful. Wow. Second — HENRIETTA. I love that.
I did not realize you were such a cat person! I think Pickle is a great name, and also think human names for cats is funny, as many people name theirs due to some description of the animal. I adopted my parent’s cat, who my Dad had named Mouser, and renamed (nicknamed) him Gato. When I was a kid, I was like you; we had a ton of cats running around (and they really did kill mice!) but I was not super creative; I think I had a Cocoa, Lucy, Whiskers, Callie etc. My favorite and longest lasting cat was a tuxedo named Jasmine, who we called Jazzy.
I am also not a dog person per se, but mostly I am not into needy animals. If it lays next to me or on me quietly, I am a fan. If it jumps up, bounces, licks, or incessantly rubs, I am not! I need my space, people (and animals)!
Pets with food names crack me up for some reason. I’m glad you had the same experience of lots of cats — some people I’ve talked to are a little shocked at the, let’s say, precarity of a barn cat’s life.
Cats are so much better than dogs! And cats are fastidious and my long haired cats have never had poop butt problems.
I had a pair of kittens I named Wallace and Millicent once- we always called them Wally and Milly- but getting vet reminders for their full names always cracked me up.
I had a Curiosity that always went by Curi too, when I was in high school.
And our current dog is Roberta de los Nopales Jones on her registration paperwork- we call her Birdie. (Our last name nor the breeder we got her from is named Jones. We just thought it was funny that the dog has a different name than we do.) The vet was… not amused to write it down in her file.
So we definitely like a longer name we shorten when naming pets.
I am cautiously optimistic after your no-poop-butt report. Those are all amazing names and I LOVE that your dog has a different last name from you. Hilarious. How could the vet not be amused?! That has to be a prerequisite of being a vet, I think — loving the variety of pet names in the world.
Ummmm…our long-haired cat definitely needs help occasionally with her butt area. It’s not every day, but we do have an entirely separate set of scissors for just cat purposes. (Also, Zelda is NOT fastidious. I think it’s possible she was taken away from her mother too early, but she has NO IDEA how to groom. It is a part-time job to groom her.)
Engie, I wish you could see my face right now. AN ENTIRELY SEPARATE PAIR OF SCISSORS.
And that you’d get to say “this is my cat, Craig.” Is amazing and needs to happen!
I KNOW.
Omg I want you to get a cat SO BADLY. They just add so much to a home. We frequently say things like “How did we ever survive before we had cats? Out lives must have been so empty!”
My husband was always allergic to cats growing up, and when I first met him he was still allergic so we didn’t have cats for years (and my son made that same comment “Maybe if Dad dies we could get a cat?”) Then it gradually dawned on us that my husband was not allergic anymore! He could pet other people’s cats and be fine- it was so strange, I guess he just grew out of it??? Anyway, we have our black cat, Charlotte (who my daughter wanted to name “Beyonce” but my son vetoed that idea) and our calico, Muffin (who the kids named- I prefer human names as well.). AAAAAND, my son and i have secret plan- we want to get an orange tabby and we’ll name him “Hobbes.” It’s secret because right now my husband doesn’t want a third cat… we’ll see.
I want a cat so badly, too!!!!!!!!!! I feel like it would be like living with a really fascinating roommate.
Good luck with your secret plan! I am all for a third cat!
I’m definitely like you – I will pet your dog and play with your dog and tell him/her he/she’s a good boy/girl, and then I will go home and thank the Lord I don’t have a dog. Total cat person all the way – it’s my GOAL to get your cat to let me pet it. I’ve had 3 – Tigger/Winnie (at the same time) and then Emme Grayce (she was gray with green eyes). Not quite ready for another one yet but love hearing the pet names…
I have the same goal! If there is a cat at someone’s house, my job is now entertaining the cat.
I have not looked into the general price range of a Siberian, but we were recently considering a cat type where the kittens sell for in the $1000 range, and that seemed ASTONISHING to me—but then, the trash cat we adopted from the shelter was $200, so that sort of reset my feelings about the price.
My main goal with cat names is to not accidentally rule out future child/grandchild names. We named cats George and Oliver 25 years ago when those names seemed ridiculous/comical: no one would use them for a CHILD! Then we were naming children years later and the names George and Oliver had come into fashion and I liked both of them but unfortunately we’d used them on cats.
Well, the trash cat price range you listed is VERY helpful in making me reframe the price of the Siberian. (I have blocked it out, apparently, but I think maybe closer to $2000? It can’t be $3000 — I think even I would think that is Too Much.) I think people DO spend that kind of money on dogs, so it shouldn’t seem so outlandish, but it is quite startling.
I did not think about potentially ruling out future grandchildren’s names!
My parents named our family poodle Sophie back in the early 90’s assuming that no one in their right mind would ever name a child SOPHIE! And now I teach three Sophie’s!
Do you watch Southern Charm? There’s a guy Craig on the show and his friend gets a dog and names it Craig. It’s so funny and mean and confusing and you would love it 🙂
LOL!
My mom had a cat named Josh once, so it doesn’t seem that strange to me.
My childhood cats: Alexei, Felix, Phineas, Ms. Teak (called Missy)
My adulthood cats: Emily, Matthew, Alexander (called Xander)
We are thinking of getting new kittens next summer, for our empty nest phase.
Oh my gosh I HOPE you get empty nest kittens!!!!
I’m totally with you on the cat/dog preference and all the reasons why! I will freely admit that a big part of my ‘no’ to getting a dog is the VASTLY increased mess quotient. If/when we get our cat he will be called Gary – full name Mr Garibaldi (after the biscuit and not the 19th century Italian general!) and will most definitely be short-haired.
GARY. Yes.
LOLOLOLOL. The thing about prepping for dogs and cats is 100% true in our case. With Zelda, some friends had rescued a litter of barn kitties and Z was the only kitty left. My friend C was making noises about taking her and she had three rambunctious children (who are now LOVELY young adults) and I was so worried that the kitty would not survive their house, so I called my husband and told him we were getting a cat. It was an inconvenient time to get a brand new kitten since we were in the process of moving, but I did not care. Zelda was not going to that house to be tortured by (now LOVELY young adults) those children.
We planned for months for the dog, though. We read books, talked to trainers, and talked through different dog scenarios.
I love both my cat and dog for different reasons. Zelda is SO affectionate and she cuddles with me and talks all the time and is so hungry. She messes with the blinds and jumps right on my stomach to try and cause internal bleeding. She pretends not to care when we coo at her because she’s so gorgeous and so soft and so pettable, but as soon as we sit down, she’s on our laps. She randomly has kitty zoomies several times a day for ten to thirty seconds and then she acts like YOU’RE the strange one when you laugh at her.
Hannah does not consent to cuddles. She will, however, walk with me for miles and defend me from any strange person who dares approach or talk to me. I mean, introverts around the world unite that a dog barking and growling at strangers to the point where you basically can’t engage with stranger is a GREAT perk of dog ownership, right? She comes to me for comfort when she’s scared (and she’s scared all the time), she chases the cat when she knows she’s not supposed to, and she loves to run around like a lunatic. She likes to chew sticks, learn new training skills, and rarely makes a peep in the house.
If you want a pet, Suzanne, there’s no time like the present! Carla is the PERFECT age for bonding and she can help do some of the caretaking.
I love Hannah and Zelda already and these details about them just make me love them more!
What a wonderful post. We are the same about dogs.
My previous cats were Emily and Travis. I now have Piper and Marlowe. I believe in people names for pets. They have their dignity. I once knew a cat named Carol. Also, one named Allen.
Piper and Marlowe! Emily and Travis! Carol and Allen!!!!
Of the cats I’ve adopted myself as an adult, I had Circe, Charybdis (that was fun spelling to the vet’s office every.single.visit), Pandora, and Punky (who was all white with a little gray mohawk). An ex brought Bunny (the sweetest, lovingest orange boy), who had actually been a stray outside my apartment in college that he adopted, and then I kept him when the ex left- so at one point I had 5 cats on my own. Most of them lived to ripe old ages (Circe made it to 20 and Charybdis to 21) but have all passed on. My boyfriend/now husband had Tigger (the grouchiest, fightingest orange boy), who just left us in August, and we adopted Jack and Charlie together.
Oh I love hearing about all these lovely cats! And Charybdis is a fantastic name for a cat.
Although I grew up with dogs and my late husband liked dogs, I’ve ended up being a cat owner. My husband liked cats too but seemed to prefer dogs; however, he would probably disagree with me. Our first cat was Kendra Michelle, named by my older daughter; she was a barn cat and feisty. My older daughter adopted a geriatric cat when she lived in Seattle; she was a gorgeous and lovable Himalayan named Hazel. Now she has a Maine Coon, Ziggy, also big and dog-like. My black cat is Marielle (Mari), so named by my younger daughter, her original owner. Now that daughter has a tabby named Carol. As you can see, we’re all Cat People!
Another cat named Carol! I love it!
I have kind of been ambivalent towards having a pet for most of my life. We had dogs when I was very little but sadly, they kept getting run over by a school bus (we had outdoor dogs and lived on a large property without fences). My parents said ENOUGH and that was the end of us having any pets… until my high school boyfriend somehow talked my parents into taking one of the cat’s in a litter of kittens. So we got a gray kitty that we named Allegro. He lived outdoors but came in the house for visits (my mom is and was a clean freak so indoor pets were not happening).
Flash forward to when I met my husband. He had a long-term cat sitting gig for a woman who traveled extensively for her job. The cat he took care of was so delightful, but then the woman moved to California to work for Apple and that was the end of that arrangement. In 2015 we got Oscar the cat. We got it from a friend’s in-law’s farm. They told us that orange cats are ALWAYS boys. The daughter of the farm owners was a genetic counselor so we figured surely they knew what they were talking about. Reader, the cat was not a boy. I remember Phil calling me one night and saying, “I think Oscar is a girl.” Sure enough, she was (although it took a 2nd opinion for another vet at her first vet appt to confirm the gender – who knew cat gender was so difficult to determine!!?). But now we very much have a part time cat and that is probably overstating things. She went to my MIL’s before our February 2020 trip to Florida and then the pandemic happened and she became my MIL’s “emotional support animal.” So now she lives with my MIL for probably 355 days of the year, if not more, and only came to our house once this year when she had her annual vet visit. It was hard to get her in her carrier and Taco does not understand how to act around cats. When he talks about Oscar to my parents he says, “kitties go ‘HISSSSSSSS'” but it’s more of a growl/hiss sound. Oscar just does not like little kids. She has warmed up to Paul and even rubbed against his legs when he gave her treats during her visit but overall, she’s much more of a fan of retired quiet people… As a person who can be easily over-stimulated especially by loud children, I can understand why she prefers my MIL’s house. But it does make me sad because my husband is SUCH a cat person. So much so that one of the few gifts I’ve bought him during our relationship is a shirt that makes it looks like he has a cat in a baby bjorn type of carrier. He wears it with pride. This is the shirt if you need a visual. He has it in a lovely baby blue shade. https://www.raygunsite.com/products/cat-pack
It sounds like Oscar is thriving in her role as an emotional support animal! I think having a cat — especially one who wasn’t the friendliest — with a small child would be SO hard. Nice that everyone can visit each other so she and Taco and Paul can get used to each other in small doses.
Oh course Kimberly won a blue ribbon 😉
I loved reading this, and the funny tweets you put in! I hope you can have a cat some day. Which convention did you go to? My sister and I went to CatCon in 2022 and had a blast and I went to PopCats in 2023! The people there are so nice and happy!
I, also, never want to have a dog 🙂
Data was our first cat, a gray cat, named for Star Trek. He was a stray a friend found on campus at ISU (Iowa) and my husband took him in (out here, in Chicagoland). Now we have Khaleesi (stray who showed up at the house), Apollo & Starbuck (siblings, born to a stray that someone took to our vet), and Eddard (who goes by Ned, who also showed up at the house). And because we live on a quiet dead-end “country”esque road, people dumb cats here 😦 So we have outdoor cats we care for – Snow Jr & Tywin. All of our cats are named for Sci Fi or Fantasy shows LOL.
That should say people “dump” cats here. Also, not sure why I described Data’s appearance and not the rest LOL.
I am LOVING all your GoT names! So fun! It really sounds like you live at the nexus of cat abandonment. How nice that they have you to adopt them!
Oh dear. Yes if you were dead your family could do a lot of things, but it sounds like getting a Siberian kitten is a better solution. And if you compare the price of the kitten to the price of the work that you do for your family, it’s a bargain. So I am all for Craig joining the family.
I started in life as a cat person and am currently a dog person. I could not chose between the two anymore then I could tell you which is my favorite stepchild. I feel very lucky to have had both.
My mom made the switch from devoted cat person to avid dog fan, too, so I suppose it can happen! Maybe one of these days it will happen for me, too?
We have been dog people traditionally, and I didn’t get a cat until one showed up last january and never left. My husband was Very Against having a cat, but my 12 year old daughter fell in love with him and he’s here to stay. She named him Ferret, which promptly became Ferret Paw (a Warriors cat thing – Carla might love that series of books, cat adventures – my daughter referred to them as “gripping”), although he is now technically too old to be a “Paw.” I love uncommon people names for dogs – I won’t list them all because we’ve had MANU dogs over the years. Some of my favorites have been Kinsey, Penelope, Kelly, Casey, Charlotte, Margot (a chihuahua; somehow I thought a French name for a Mexican dog hilarious) and Casper (a Weimaraner – groan). I hope you get your cat eventually!
Margot the chihuahua!!!!! Love it. It cracks me up that cats often choose a family rather than the other way around. They just show up and say, you’re a cat person now. Usually seems to work out???
I am also allergic to cats. I am allergic to dogs, but not as much. With allergy shots, I was able to live with Finnegan. I am definitely more of a dog person. Cats are cute, but no thanks. We had a miniature schnauzer when I was a baby and his name was Fritz. We gave him to my grandparents because my brother was deathly allergic. I don’t have any cute cat names, but I always wanted an Old English Sheepdog named Buster.
Isn’t it funny how we have these visions of particular pets, complete with names?!
When my husband and I first started trying to have a child we decided in advance that if we were unsuccessful we would instead adopt two dogs: a miniature poodle for him named Mimolette and a corgi for me named Pamela. We had a baby instead and named her after my husband’s grandmother.
Another Pamela!!! Mimolette is a perfect name for a mini poodle.
I sadly never had a pet in my life although I love animals and I helped out at the vet office next door growing up. I once met a dog named Oliver, but because I know quite a few Olivers (humans) in real life, I found it odd to meet a dog with that name. We also had to put Oliver (the dog) down and that was super sad and one of the reasons why I didn’t become a vet (I couldn’t handle the heartbreak).
My daughter wants to be a vet and I just… don’t know if she could do the hard parts. Maybe she could! She’s only ten! But her love is so vast I feel like it would break her the first time she had to put an animal down.
If I was lucky enough to ever get a kitten, I would name it Calliope Ragbag, after my favorite Mrs. Piggle Wiggle character.
YES!!!!
– my favorite children’s book is Pickles the Fire Cat, so I think the plural Pickle is an excellent name!
– I do not currently have a cat for several reasons, but most of them are my husband being a dog person, sigh. But my last three cats were named Tucker, Ramen and Lazy Boy. As a kid, we had a cat named Mother (after she had kittens) and we kept one kitten that I named Fave (for favorite, natch). Mother was an indoor/outdoor cat, and the neighbors thought my mom was a lunatic yelling Mother out the back door to bring her in!
– we currently have 2 dogs. One of them my very young daughter wanted to name Titty. We compromised on Tilly. We have used some ridiculous names, but not usually people names.
We had cats when I was growing up. Sheba and Evenrude are the ones I remember most, and Missy. My mom and brother were more into cats. I love cats, but I love dogs more. I’ve had three dogs in my life, Samantha, who I had for 16 years, she died in 1988. Then Genevieve, who I had from late 2002 to early 2012. That was a long stretch in between Samantha and Genevieve…we lived in a lot of places where we couldn’t have a dog, and then my daughter was very small and I’m not thrilled with the dog/baby combination. Then there was our Mulder, from 2015 to 2023. Will we get another dog? I hope so, someday. Sigh. My husband is deathly allergic to cats, so no cats for us.
My previous cat was an adult rescue, and the niece of the woman who was rescuing him announced, “He says his name is Carlos.” So Carlos he was to me as well–though really only when speaking of him, I called him Buddy most of the time. Who knows why.
Our cats came with the names Taffy and Truffles and we kept them. It’s delightful. (They were kitten rescues and didn’t know their names. The shelter said they just have fun putting names on the website and adopters then choose their own names. We didn’t!)
I want you to have a cat so much! They are the best pets, honestly. I love dogs, but I think it’s just too hard to have a dog living in an apartment. All of the walking! You can’t ever just let them out in the yard like my mom does with her dogs. I get my dog fix with Chip and Lucy.
I wanted people names for my cats. I spent a few days after getting Eloise calling her Eloise and Freya. Eventually, I realized she was an Eloise aka Ellie! I named Lila after hearing the name from my cousin, who was a surrogate for a woman and named the baby Lila. (Well, she ended up having twins. CAN YOU IMAGINE. And the girl twin was Lila.) I just loved the name Lila so much and thought it was a perfect cat name! So when I went to the shelter and saw my Lila there, with the shelter name Lola, it felt perfect. I really want to get a boy cat and name him Albus after Dumbledore. HOW CUTE WOULD AN ALBUS CAT BE??? Ah, I can’t handle it. But I can’t live that three-cat life, haha.
Oh, I wish I could have a cat. I’ve had a dog -and loved the dog – but I think I’d be more of a cat person if I weren’t allergic. Sigh.
I love that you have hypothetical cat names. 🙂
The husband is a cat person. He had two cats when I met him. The first day I was at his apartment and. he left the room his cat attacked me. I am not a fan of cats in apartments. They can be outside and I am ok. But not inside. He wants a cat. Its a topic.
I have no idea about cat names.
I may have suggestions for tortoises though.
