It’s in the little moments that you can really see a person. The small, almost casual things they do for you, not thinking about their weight. The profusion of tiny, incalculable ways they make life bearable, enjoyable, worthwhile.

The way my husband ruffles my hair as he passes me in the living room; the way he captures a comment made in passing and turns it into a fabulous surprise; the way he smoothes my face with his freshly shaven cheeks before he leaves for work.
The exquisite little tree my mom set on the guest room dresser over Christmas; the patient advice she gives about work situations; the way she listens to – and helps interpret – my dreams.
The chocolates I make with my father; the emails with staccato notes about the weather and his patient load; his phone calls in the middle of the work day when I’m sick.
The handwritten notes my brother sent me from basic training; the photos he emails of his cat; his steady hands on the wheel as he drives me to the airport.
When it comes to what matters, these are just a handful of millions.

“In the fleeting time we have on this earth, what matters is not wealth, or status, or power, or fame – but rather, how well we have loved, and what small part we have played in bettering the lives of others.” – Barack Obama
It really is in all these little moments, isn’t it. 🙂

In the constant “go-go-GO!” we surround ourselves with, this is exactly what we need to remember!

Aw, what a beautiful post!
It’s so true. I have really had to concentrate on these small things lately as I slowly lose touch with my mother. I realize that many small memories will outweigh the bad if I know how significant they really are.
Thanks for writing!
I love the quote!
I always like it when Matt reaches over to squeeze my head when we are in bed.
