My favorite aspect of Mexican restaurants is the free chips and salsa they give you while you’re waiting for your meal.
I could honestly skip the actual meal part and just eat the chips and salsa.
And if the chips and salsa are bottomless? Watch out. I will NOT stop eating.
There’s just something wonderful about fresh salsa and crisp tortilla chips.
Droooooolllllll.
So when I was browsing through The Pioneer Woman’s blog and came across a recipe for restaurant style salsa, I was… shall we say… intrigued.
The first time I made it was for the Fourth of July. I was attending a barbecue and wanted to bring homemade guacamole. And why not bring some homemade salsa too?
And then I had a sudden craving for it the other day. When I reached the checkout line at the grocery store, I realized that I had somehow picked up all the ingredients. Imagine that!
So I made it again.
Oh Internet, how I hate this recipe.
It is so easy. So inexpensive. And so freaking delicious.
Bye bye, self control! Bye bye, diet plan! Hello, extra pounds! (Just now as I’m writing this, I polished off about 15 chips and a quarter cup of salsa.
You may recall that I hate tomatoes.
Yes, I do. But I LOVE salsa. And one reason this particular salsa is so amazing is that it is SMOOTH. As in, no chunks of tomatoes! As in, I can eat it without getting grossed out and vomiting!
I’m not going to do a whole recipe post here, in honor of my husband… Who, whenever I whip out my camera to photograph a recipe in action, always kindly points out that the recipe blogger has already catalogued the experience… So why do I need to do it?
In this case, I am going to agree with him.
Because can you really get any better recipe recap than a Pioneer Woman Original? She is amusing. She takes great photos. And – in this one at least – she features nachos.
I am trying mightily to not “feature nachos” in my day today.
Good luck to you in doing the same.

mmmm even though it’s 8:30 in the morning that chips and salsa looks amazing! I love mexican food. And I agree, best part of going to get mexican (besides the margs, of course) is the free chips and salsa…bring it on!
That sounds SOOOO good!
Ha! Oh, I hate salsa, as a hater of tomatoes. (Strangely, though, I love pasta sauce.) So instead, I just devour guacamole.
salsa is totally okay! very diet friendly!
Hey, salsa can’t be THAT bad for you–it has tomatoes and vegetables and vitamins and stuff! I would look at it this way–it stops you from eating chips and dip (at least this is the case for me) which is WAYYYY less healthy. Besides, it’s Friday. Dig in, I say.
YUM! I haven’t made that salsa, but when our tomatoes were growing this summer, I made my dad’s homemade salsa several times. I could drink it straight – so good and fresh!
Oh we would get along so well! My favorite things in the world include chips and dips =) It’s what I ask to have for my “special birthday dinner” every year! Looks delicious!
I hate tomatoes too usually, so I love salsa without big tomato chunks. And nachos??? As in chips covered in cheese and salsa, maybe some meat, hopefully some jalapenos? Now THOSE are my downfall!
Mmmmm….looks SO good! I may just have to make some…
Look at what you did to all of us. You just made us all crazed salsa gluttons today!
ACK, I totally want Mexican food now. Ay ya yi!
OK, I just clicked over to the PW site and NOW I want nachos. Holy deliciousness.
Wow, I love salsa. LOVE it! As in, literally can not get enough of it. I am definitely having a craving now and this is a definite must-have this weekend. Thanks for the recipe link!
And here I thought you actually HATED the recipe… and I was thinking WAHHHHH?? How could the Pioneer Woman screw up
Now I am going to have to try it. Perhaps I could whip that up for S and his roommate while I am visiting? I think they would probably like that!!
Can I give you my mama’s recipe and you compare the two? Cuz my mama’s salsa is hands down the best I’ve ever had!
YES. Please!
I HATE tomatoes too but go to Mexican restaurants just for chips and salsa regularly. Can’t wait to try this- I must have missed it on her site! Thanks for sharing!
Now I’m craving salsa….and it’s only 9:30am. Thanks! LOL
Oh! I am glad you pointed this out (and I am the exact same way, except I L-O-V-E tomatoes!), because we go through two bottles of salsa a week (we have issues), so maybe this could save some moolah? Will see!
(Doubt it will save any money if we go through a gallon of it, though!)
I couldn’t agree more. This evening, as we were making our third batch in just a few weeks, there seemed to be an ingredient missing. What did we forget? Too lazy to check the internet, (it is, after all, down the hall, away from the salsa) we both grabbed our Iphones and searched the basic terms. “Pioneer woman salsa”.
Your post headline showed up as “Why I hate the pioneer woman’s restaurant style salsa…” Without going to your site, I knew immediately what you were going to say, and it is true.
I cannot get enough of this salsa and have long been a fan of chips and salsa for a meal, for lunch, for breakfast, all joking aside. When I first read the ingredients contained canned tomatoes, I thought hmph, okay. To each his own, but Hunts brand plum tomatoes in this recipe is a sure shot for the entire batch to disappear fast.
“Should we put the veins and seeds of the jalapenos in this time?” I asked my husband. He replied “I don’t know, I didn’t get any, how was it last time?”
Bravo, Ree Drummond, this is a fabulous, easy to make and inexpensive salsa, and thank you, Mrs. Doctor, for sharing!
Here I am in my car at the grocery store, searching on the Internet for pw’s restaurant salsa when I see your post. I was hooked by the title. I couldn’t resist reading since I could not fathom someone not liking this salsa! Thanks for the smile and comfort in knowing I am not the only one who is tempted to polish off the whole bowl!
